Is Google Ditching SIM Cards in Pixel 8 Series?
Renowned Android analyst Mishaal Rahman has offered insights into a potential game-changing move by Google. It is believed that the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro could be the first devices in the Pixel series to exclusively feature eSIM technology.
An Eye on Leaks and Renders
Rahman's speculations are based on leaked renders of the Pixel 8 series that emerged earlier this year. These renders, which were shared by tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks) in association with SmartPrix, do not show a traditional SIM card slot. However, SmartPrix's report stated that the Pixel 8 series would have a SIM card slot on the left edge.

Rahman said he spoke with Hemmerstoffer about his discovery. Hemmerstoffer said that while the renders are generally accurate, they may not show every detail. He also said that SmartPrix's claim about the SIM slot being on the left edge of the phones is their interpretation based on the renders, not on the information he provided.
Rahman also pointed to a leaked video of the Pixel 8 Pro that appeared to show a SIM card tray on the left side of the device.
The situation now presents two distinct possibilities: either the leaked renders are not entirely accurate representations of the final design, or Google is considering a strategic move to eliminate physical SIM card slots, potentially in specific markets.
Taking a Cue from Apple
Last year, Apple shook things up by bringing in eSIM tech for its iPhone 14 series. They ditched the physical SIM slot in the U.S., showing they're all for change. Now, the big question is: Will Google do something similar?
The Path Ahead
The Mountain View giant has already confirmed that it is developing a new Android feature that will allow users to quickly and easily transfer their eSIMs to a new phone. A leaked preview showed that the eSIM transfer option will be available when setting up a new phone.
To activate it, users will simply need to scan a QR code from their old phone that contains their existing eSIM profile. The feature is expected to debut with the Pixel 8 series and then be rolled out to other Android devices later.
