iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus Could Launch with USB Type-C Port Alongside Upcoming iPhone 15 Series

Just last year, Apple introduced the iPhone 14 series, which featured the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. As we eagerly await the upcoming iPhone 15 series, recent information suggests an intriguing update: Apple plans to re-release the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus this year with a significant hardware change. This change involves replacing the current Lightning port with a USB Type-C port.

Insights from tvOS 17 Beta

A source on X (formerly Twitter) recently revealed an intriguing piece of information. The beta version of tvOS 17, made available to testers ahead of its official release, contained references to two iPhone models that are not currently in existence - "iPhone 14,1" and "iPhone 14,9."

The same source also shed light on four additional iPhone models. However, these models were conspicuously absent from the final release.

Apple's Strategic Approach

Traditionally, Apple discontinues its Pro and Pro Max models shortly after unveiling their successors. Only the non-pro iPhones are kept on sale for a few years, but this time Apple is shaking things up and this could be due to the implementation of the common charger regulation in the EU by 2024 and California's mandate for electronics to include USB Type-C ports by 2026.

This move could also work in Apple's favor, considering that previous-generation iPhones usually receive price cuts. Those interested in purchasing an iPhone 14 from the last generation would likely appreciate obtaining a USB Type-C port at a notably lower cost compared to the upcoming iPhone 15 series, which undoubtedly won't come with an affordable price tag.

This re-release strategy isn't entirely new for Apple. In 2021, the company introduced the original AirPods Pro alongside a 3rd Gen AirPods Pro featuring a MagSafe-compatible charging case.
