Key Apple Supplier Foxconn Initiates iPhone 15 Production in Tamil Nadu, India
The much-anticipated iPhone 15 by Apple is likely to debut on September 12, 2023. The noteworthy twist this time is that the new iPhone will be produced in Tamil Nadu, India. This move aims to bridge the production gap between India and China and leverage the capabilities of Indian manufacturing.
The heart of this seismic change lies in a state-of-the-art Foxconn Technology Group facility nestled in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This manufacturing powerhouse is gearing up to roll out the latest iterations of the iconic iPhone, right on the heels of its production debut in Chinese factories. This move is poised to effectively reduce the temporal lag between Indian and Chinese manufacturing cycles.

The scale of iPhone production in India hinges on the availability of key components that are often imported. The Chennai facility is taking proactive steps to amplify its production capabilities, thereby fostering the assembly of these cutting-edge devices on Indian soil.
India's Evolving Role in iPhone Manufacturing
Prior to the iPhone 14, the Indian contribution to Apple's iPhone production was rather modest, trailing significantly behind China's output. The lag of six to nine months between the two countries was a considerable challenge. However, this disparity witnessed a remarkable reduction last year, culminating in a noteworthy achievement - by the close of March, India had successfully contributed to 7 percent of global iPhone production.
In a strategic move that underscores Apple's commitment to diversifying its production base, multiple manufacturers in India are aligning their operations to assemble the forthcoming iPhone 15. Apart from Foxconn, other key players such as Pegatron Corp. and a Wistron Corp. facility - now under the aegis of the Tata Group - are gearing up to contribute their expertise to this endeavor.
Apple's mission for the near future revolves around a lofty objective: synchronizing the shipment timelines of iPhones manufactured in India and China. While the aspiration is admirable, suppliers are grappling with uncertainties surrounding its realization. According to sources cited by Bloomberg News, the challenge lies in ensuring a seamless orchestration of operations across two continents.
Beyond iPhones
In an intriguing parallel development, Apple has cast its gaze towards the city of Hyderabad, India. Reports have surfaced indicating that Apple is poised to commence the production of its iconic AirPods wireless earbuds at a state-of-the-art Foxconn facility in Hyderabad. This facility, powered by a hefty $400 million investment, is anticipated to kickstart large-scale manufacturing by December 2024, as reported by PTI.
