Motorola Signature 27 will Support GrapheneOS: Here's Why it's a Major Win for Privacy

GrapheneOS is set to expand beyond Google Pixel phones, with the project confirming that Motorola’s Signature 27 will be its first supported non-Pixel device. The move matters because GrapheneOS has historically approved only devices that meet strict hardware security requirements, making wider Android support difficult.

The confirmation came after GrapheneOS announced a partnership with Motorola in March. That partnership raised expectations around the Signature 27, but also questions about whether a Motorola device could meet the project’s standards. The GrapheneOS account on X has now said the phone will be supported, although a fuller announcement is still pending.

Why Motorola Signature 27 Support Matters for GrapheneOS

GrapheneOS is not a typical Android custom ROM. It is built around privacy and security hardening, and the team limits support to phones with suitable hardware features, firmware support and update commitments. Until now, that approach effectively kept the supported device list tied to Google’s Pixel line.

The current supported range covers recent Pixel generations, including Pixel 6 through Pixel 10 models and their A-series variants. The Motorola Signature 27 would therefore mark a major shift, giving privacy-focused Android users a second hardware brand to consider without giving up GrapheneOS support.

One key requirement is Memory Tagging Extension, or MTE. This hardware feature helps detect certain memory safety bugs, which can be used in serious exploits. GrapheneOS treats MTE as essential for newer devices, which is why chipset-level support alone is not enough if the feature is disabled or unavailable.

What is Known About the Signature 27 So Far

The Motorola Signature 27 has not been fully launched yet, but early details point to flagship-class hardware. It is expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which supports MTE. That makes it a stronger fit for GrapheneOS than many Android phones that lack required security capabilities.

The phone is also expected to feature a 50-megapixel main camera using a 1/1.28-inch Sony Lytia 910 sensor, alongside a 200-megapixel periscope camera. A Bang & Olufsen-tuned speaker system and seven years of operating system updates have also been mentioned.

GrapheneOS support does not mean users must avoid Google apps entirely. The operating system runs Google Play services in a sandbox, reducing their system-level privileges. Most apps are expected to work normally, although some banking, payment or device-integrity-dependent apps may still behave differently.

More Motorola phones could eventually follow, but support will depend on whether each model meets GrapheneOS requirements. For now, the Signature 27 is the important one to watch, as it could open the door to a broader hardware future for one of Android’s most security-focused operating systems.
