MWC 2024: HMD to Launch a Barbie Flip Phone and a New Nokia Mobile

In a strategic move announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, HMD Global, renowned for Nokia-branded phones, has unveiled plans for a comprehensive rebranding effort. This signals a shift for the Finnish mobile manufacturer, which has exclusively operated under the Nokia brand for the past seven years.

The company, now going beyond the confines of Nokia, will introduce smartphones under its own HMD name while continuing to offer Nokia phones. This move aligns with HMD's vision to create devices that are "affordable, beautiful, desirable, and repairable."

Barbie-Branded Flip Phone Partnership

One of the significant highlights of HMD's rebranding strategy is the partnership with Mattel, leading to the launch of a Barbie-branded flip phone. Set to hit the market in the summer of this year, this retro feature phone, characterized by a pink color scheme, aims to capture the nostalgia of iconic designs. The exact specifications are under wraps for now.

Adding to the partnership, Ravi Kunwar, Vice President, India and APAC at HMD, said, "We are very excited to announce the new HMD multi-brand strategy, which opens infinite collab possibilities. Our global association with Mattel to launch a Barbie co-branded device is a prime example. HMD will have 'easy repairability' and 'sustainability' as part of its brand promise always. We are confident about a strong smart 5G portfolio for India and other markets, which we will announce very soon."

Nokia's Return and HMD-Branded Smartphones

Contrary to earlier reports about HMD distancing itself from the Nokia brand, the company confirmed the continuation of Nokia phones. HMD teased the return of an "iconic Nokia phone" in May 2024, presenting a pixelated image of a yellow device resembling a retro "candy bar"-style phone. This signals a gradual transition rather than an abrupt discontinuation of Nokia devices. Additionally, HMD is set to launch two smartphones under its own brand in July, contributing to its diversified product portfolio.

Emphasis on Repairability

HMD Global also aims to enhance device repairability, reducing the complexities associated with fixing common issues like a broken screen. Building on the success of its partnership with iFixit for the Nokia G22, HMD plans to make half of its smartphones sold globally in 2024 repairable. Furthermore, the company is introducing a toolkit for developers and businesses, featuring open design files and information on software integration.
