Nokia Changes Its Iconic Logo for the First Time in 60 Years

Nokia has shed its iconic logo for the first time in nearly 60 years, debuting a new look at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2023. The change isn't merely cosmetic, as the smartphone maker announced its new strategy of focusing on its B2B technology.

Nokia's blue logo and typeface have been dropped in favor of a modern-looking design. The new logo will feature different background colors, according to the use case. "There was the association to smartphones and nowadays we are a business technology company," said Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark in an interview with Reuters.

Nokia's Renewed Strategy

Lundmark said in a blog post, "We are updating our strategy, and, as a key enabler, we are also refreshing our brand to reflect who we are today: a business-to-business technology innovation leader pioneering the future where networks meet cloud."

The Nokia CEO stated that the new logo reflects the brand's current outlook which focuses on sustainable and profitable growth. Lundmark first worked for Nokia from 1990 to 2000. He later took a long 20-year break, only to return in 2020 to revive the floundering company.

The Nokia chief adopted a new strategy that comprises three phases-reset, scale, and accelerate. Lundmark announced that the reset stage phase has been completed, and now the company is preparing for the scale phase. The brand plans on "delivering strong growth and stable profitability" while expanding the company's customer base.

While Nokia will continue to sell gear to telecom companies, the brand intends to shift its focus to other businesses as well. "We want to launch a new brand that is focusing very much on the networks and industrial digitalization, which is a completely different thing from the legacy mobile phones," Lundmark said in an interview with Bloomberg.

Is the Iconic Nokia Logo Gone Forever?

While Nokia introduces a contemporary-looking logo, the company hasn't retired the classic blue logo either. Back in 2016, HMD Global acquired the license to use the Nokia trademark, making it the "sole global licensee" for all Nokia-branded tablets and mobile phones.

According to a Nokiamob report, HMD Global confirmed that the blue logo will remain unchanged. "HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, will continue to use the classic Nokia logo," the company said. The brand continues to roll out smartphones with the classic Nokia logo, with the Nokia G22 arriving as the company's latest offering.
