OnePlus Open 2 Rumors Point to Big Upgrades: Snapdragon 8 Elite, Wireless Charging, Water Resistance, and More

Foldable phones have made a quiet but powerful mark on the smartphone industry, and OnePlus has been part of this innovation with the OnePlus Open, its global version of the China-exclusive Oppo Find N3. A year into its lifecycle, the Open remains a strong device but is clearly due for an upgrade.

Now, rumors surrounding its successor-likely to be the Oppo Find N5 in China and the OnePlus Open 2 globally-are picking up steam. If these early leaks hold true, OnePlus is preparing a foldable that could address previous concerns while adding features that many felt were missing.

OnePlus Open 2 Rumors Point to Big Upgrades – Launch Timeline Tipped

Snapdragon 8 Elite: A Serious Power Boost

Performance has always been a cornerstone for flagship devices, and the Open 2 looks set to deliver. Reports from credible leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo indicate that the new device will run on Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

Compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the first OnePlus Open, this upgrade will offer smoother multitasking, better energy efficiency, and improved gaming performance.

Wireless Charging Is Finally Here

One of the loudest critiques of the original OnePlus Open (review) was the lack of wireless charging. The upcoming Open 2 seems ready to correct this omission.

For a device marketed as a premium option, wireless charging isn't just a convenience-it's an expectation. It's also a major win for those who rely on charging pads at home or in their cars.

Thinner, Lighter, and Built to Last

Foldables are exciting, but durability is often their Achilles' heel. The Open 2 seems to take this challenge seriously. According to the leaks, the device will feature an IPX8 water resistance rating, giving it better protection against spills and unexpected rain.

The leaks also tease something intriguing: an "anti-drop body structure." While details are vague, this could mean significant improvements in drop resistance, addressing one of the biggest fears foldable owners face.

What's more, the device is expected to be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor-a remarkable achievement considering the added durability and features. For a foldable, these changes matter. Foldables already stretch the boundaries of portability, and a lighter form factor could make the Open 2 far more comfortable to use day-to-day.

An Improved Camera Setup

Cameras are another area where foldables often compromise, but the Open 2 looks promising. Leaks suggest a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, offering significant improvements in optical zoom capabilities. Combined with earlier reports of a triple 50MP rear camera setup, it's clear OnePlus is focused on delivering flagship-level photography.

When Can You Expect the Open 2?

Rumors indicate that the Oppo Find N5 will launch in China by Q1 2025, likely before the end of March. If OnePlus follows the same pattern as last year, the OnePlus Open 2 will hit global markets shortly after-possibly by early Q2 2025.

On the software side, expect the device to run Android 15 with Oppo's ColorOS 15 in China and OxygenOS 15 internationally.
