Oppo had filed patents for iPhone X-like design back in January 2017
Full-screen displays have become a must-have feature on new smartphones.
With the introduction of Galaxy S8 duo last year, Samsung basically set the trend for full-screen design in the commercial smartphone market. Since then a lot of smartphone manufacturers have incorporated the design and full-screen devices have become mainstream. Besides, it has become a must-have feature on new smartphones.
Till date, we have seen a lot of handsets come out with bigger displays having 18:9 aspect ratio and slim bezels. However, Apple seemed to be a bit ahead in the game with the introduction of iPhone X which featured a screen with very thin bezels and a small notch at the top. We could say it was almost a true bezel-less smartphone.
And now it seems more and more handset makers are trying to incorporate such design within their smartphones. Previous reports have suggested that Huawei and Xiaomi could be working on such smartphones. Apart from that, Oppo also seems to be working on such design. Just yesterday alleged renders of Oppo R15 (Oppo R13) appeared online and it showed a phone with a similar design. While we are speculating the case, now reports have surfaced online stating that the Chinese company had already filed patents for a smartphone with iPhone X like displays.
In fact, Oppo has filed patents for multiple variants that will have a full-screen design. According to the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), Oppo had already applied for full-screen patents back in January 2017. What we can say from this is that the company has been thinking about it for some time but has been delaying on the launch for some reason. But the situation could change this year.
Talking about the patent images they show different types of notch designs that could be used on top of the display. The designs include a semicircle-shaped notch, then there is an inverted triangle one, the third one shows a semi-square shaped notch and the last one shows a semi-arc notch. However, these seem pretty different from the iPhone X one which is longer.Oppo shouldn't face any patent infringement as such if it does come out with a smartphone featuring such design.
In any case, it seems that Oppo is getting ready to disrupt the market with its upcoming products. We will find out in the coming months as to where Oppo is headed.
