OPPO will soon unveil a 5G-enabled smartphone by the end of this year. The upcoming OPPO 5G smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm's dual-mode 5G mobile platform that will support both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) networks. The announcement was made by Henry Tang, OPPO's Chief 5G Scientist, at the Qualcomm 5G Summit 2019 in Barcelona.

OPPO hasn't shared any concrete details about the Qualcomm's 5G modem that will supply power to the company's upcoming 5G smartphone. However, there are only two 5G modems in the Qualcomm's current portfolio of 5G-enabled chipsets- the X50 and the X55 Modem.

As the latter is a multi-mode 5G chipset, the upcoming OPPO handset might be powered by the X55 5G modem. The multi-mode 5G solution is designed to allow OEMs to build 5G multimode devices. The Snapdragon X55 5G modem supports virtually any combination of spectrum bands and/or modes: 5G mm Wave and sub-6 GHz, standalone and non-standalone modes, TDD and FDD, spectrum sharing, LTE and legacy modes (3G, 2G).
With up to 7Gbps speed, the Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF system can provide a near-instant connection between the user and the cloud.

Henry Tang represented OPPO at the 5G Summit alongside executives and R&D principals from a host of world-leading technology companies. Tang expressed his conviction that 5G smartphones are on the verge of mass adoption. The company's next-generation dual-mode 5G offerings is expected to deliver a superior experience to consumers in global markets, making 5G readily available to a wider consumer base worldwide.

Tang also mentioned that OPPO is actively working with more than a dozen global operators to accelerate the commercialization of 5G worldwide. The company is expected to introduce multiple 5G products to its global markets in the coming year. The company's current 5G portfolio comprises of OPPO Reno 5G. It is touted as the first 5G handset to be commercially available in Europe.

Besides OPPO, other manufacturers have also unveiled 5G-enabled products. Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the company's first 5G smartphone to come with an integrated 5G modem- Kirin 990 SoC. Samsung also recently unveiled the 5G-enabled Galaxy S10 handset which is powered by 2.7 GHz Octa Exynos 9820 Octa (8 nm) processor. Some other 5G-enabled smartphones are- Huawei Mate X, Vivo Nex 3 5G, LG V50 ThinQ, OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, etc.

The year 2020 will see the launch of multiple 5G-enabled handsets. In addition to the flagship price segment, the 5G networks will also be made available to the mid-range and budget smartphones by some manufactures. By the end of the year 2020, the market will offer consumers the option to buy several 5G-enabled handsets for ultra-fast connectivity.
