Qualcomm Announces 3D Sonic Max Fingerprint Technology At Tech Summit 2019
Along with a couple of mobile processors, Qualcomm has also announced its next-generation in-display fingerprint technology dubbed as the 3D Sonic Max fingerprint technology. The new tech is likely to be seen on future flagship smartphones. Compared to the standard in-display fingerprint sensor, the new technology has several benefits like a larger scanning area.
It is said that a user can use put thumbs simultaneously to further enhance the security. And the new sensor is also more accurate compared to the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor used on the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Note 10 series.
In theory, it offers up to 17x more real estate for the scanning and we think, Samsung will be one of the early adopters of this technology. The company claims that the 3D Sonic Max fingerprint technology has an accuracy of 1:50,000 and this sensor will be using AI to improve the overall performance of the sensors.
Besides the smartphone application, Qualcomm claims that technology can be used on automobiles, IoT, and medical applications. The company has gathered a large number of fingerprints to improve the machine learning capabilities of this sensor.
Samsung introduced the ultrasonic fingerprint technology on its flagship Galaxy S10 series in early 2019. There were several reports that the phone with this technology can be unlocked with any fingerprint with screen protectors on top of the display.
Some of the banks stopped supporting the fingerprint sensor as an authentication factor on select Galaxy smartphones. Though it was fast, it had some serious issues. I hope, Qualcomm has resolved this issue with its 3D Sonic Max fingerprint technology.
With a larger scanning area, users can easily unlock their phones without looking at the screen and in the coming days, the company might be able to make a whole smartphone screen into a fingerprint sensor.
