Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: Positioned Below the 8 Elite Gen 5

Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit in Maui is always where the company lays out its next big moves, and this year was no different. Alongside the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and the PC-focused Snapdragon X2 Elite chips, the company gave us a brief look at something a little less hyped but still worth paying attention to—the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

A Second Flagship Option

Unlike the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is being positioned as a step down. Qualcomm didn’t go into deep detail during the keynote, but Alex Katouzian, who heads Mobile, Compute, and XR at the company, made it clear that the idea is to offer “more choices and flexibility” without stripping away core flagship features.

That positioning suggests the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could land in premium phones that don’t quite hit the same performance or pricing ceiling as devices powered by the “Elite” chip.

Launch Timeline Still Vague

Katouzian didn’t confirm when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will actually ship, only noting that Qualcomm will share more information later this year. That leaves room for speculation about whether we’ll see it inside phones before the holiday season or if it’ll be pushed into early 2026 launches.

Previous leaks hinted that the chip would carry the model number SM8845, which lines up with Qualcomm’s usual naming conventions, but the company hasn’t confirmed that yet.

Until Qualcomm shares the technical details, though, it’s mostly a waiting game. For now, the spotlight remains firmly on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which sets the performance bar for the next generation of Android flagships.
