Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 vs MediaTek Dimensity 9500: How the 2026 Flagship Chips Compare

Qualcomm and MediaTek have both announced their top-tier smartphone processors for 2026. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was revealed today, while MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 launched a few days earlier.

While smartphones haven’t launched with this chip at their heart yet, you can expect them to start rolling out soon. So let’s look at what each brings to the table.

Where They Differ

Both chips use the same 3nm process, but they focus on different strengths. Qualcomm is chasing raw speed and connectivity — its Oryon cores peak at 4.6GHz for strong single-core performance, and its Snapdragon X85 modem leads on paper with 12.5Gbps speeds and satellite support. It also leans on advanced HDR imaging features like Dolby Vision.

MediaTek, on the other hand, is highlighting efficiency and graphics. Its Ultra core hits 4.21GHz, but the bigger story is the power savings of up to 55% at peak load. The Mali-G1 Ultra GPU doubles ray tracing hardware and supports 120fps gaming, while faster memory and 4-channel storage could make it better for multitasking.

A First Look: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on the Realme GT 8 Pro

We had the chance to test the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on a demo unit of the upcoming Realme GT 8 Pro, and the results were pretty telling. In 3DMark’s Wild Life Stress Test, the chip hit a best loop score of 24,755, but stability dropped sharply to just 11%. The Solar Bay test showed a similar pattern, with stability around 30%. In other words, the chip can deliver huge bursts of power, but holding that peak for long stretches is still tricky.

When it came to actual gaming, though, things looked a lot steadier. BGMI averaged 111 FPS, Call of Duty Mobile stayed locked at 120 FPS, and even Genshin Impact managed about 44 FPS on the highest settings — all without the phone heating up uncomfortably.

From these early runs, it seems the chip is built for quick spikes of performance but balances that with surprisingly efficient gameplay. You can read our full breakdown of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on the Realme GT 8 Pro here.

Phones Coming With These Chips

The Xiaomi 17 series will be the first to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 later today.

Realme has confirmed that the GT 8 Pro will use the new chip but hasn’t announced a date yet, while POCO has also confirmed a flagship with the processor.

Samsung is expected to bring the Galaxy S26 series with its exclusive “For Galaxy” version of the 8 Elite Gen 5, which should run at higher clock speeds than the standard model. The iQOO 15 is also expected with this chipset, and we anticipate OPPO and vivo will power their X9 Ultra and X300 Ultra flagships with it next year.

On the Dimensity 9500 side, the chip will debut with the OPPO Find X9 series and is also expected in the vivo X300 lineup. Brands like POCO, iQOO, and Realme are also likely to use it in “flagship-killer” devices.
