Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is Here! And Qualcomm Says It’s the Most Powerful Smartphone Chip Yet

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor for smartphones, marking a significant advancement in mobile technology. This chip is the first to support the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, enhancing video capture quality. The Xiaomi 17 series will debut with this chipset, and other brands like Samsung and OnePlus are also set to adopt it.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 offers a notable CPU upgrade with custom Oryon cores, delivering improved performance and efficiency. It maintains a 2+6 core layout, featuring two Prime cores at 4.6GHz and six Performance cores at 3.62GHz. Qualcomm claims a 20% performance boost over its predecessor, though it's unclear if this applies to single or multi-core tasks.

Enhanced GPU and AI Capabilities

Qualcomm's new chip includes a "sliced" architecture with Adreno High Performance Memory (Adreno HPM), providing an 18MB cache for game developers. This results in up to 10% power savings. The GPU now runs at 1.2GHz, offering a 23% performance increase and a 20% reduction in power consumption compared to the previous model.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also features advancements in AI processing with its next-generation Hexagon NPU, which is 37% faster than its predecessor. It includes added AI accelerators for running large language models locally and supports INT2 precision for better AI model quantization.

Camera and Video Innovations

Despite maintaining similar camera specifications as before, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 introduces several enhancements. It supports a new APV codec for near-lossless video quality and post-production adjustments like color grading. This positions Android phones closer to iPhones in terms of video capture capabilities.

The chipset also features Dragon Fusion technology developed with Arcsoft, offering advanced AI tone mapping for improved video quality. Additionally, Snapdragon Audio Sense enhances audio recording by providing pro-level sound capture with wind noise rejection and HDR audio capabilities.

Connectivity Improvements

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses Qualcomm's X85 modem, promising faster download speeds of up to 12.5Gbps and upload speeds of up to 3.7Gbps. It retains the FastConnect 7900 suite from the previous generation, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB on one chip.

This connectivity suite offers up to a 40% power saving compared to its predecessor's implementation. However, not all devices may include UWB support despite these advancements.

Upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Smartphones

A wide range of manufacturers will feature Qualcomm's latest flagship processor in their devices soon. Brands such as HONOR, iQOO, nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, POCO, realme, REDMAGIC, Redmi, ASUS ROG, Samsung, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE are confirmed partners.

The Xiaomi 17 series is set to be the first phone family equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. These phones are expected to launch later this month in China before potentially expanding globally at MWC in early March. Samsung is also listed as a partner for this new processor generation; thus, some Galaxy S26 series models might incorporate this cutting-edge technology.
