Redmi, Realme Face Major Threat in the Mid-Range Smartphone Market from OnePlus, Lava
The Indian Smartphone Market is witnessing a significant change in consumer preferences, particularly among the youth. Power players like Redmi and Realme are facing a challenge from emerging brands like OnePlus and Lava. As per a Techarc study, the youth's changing preferences are likely to impact the market shares of established brands, signaling a major shift in the Indian Smartphone Market.
The Indian Smartphone Market has long been dominated by power players like Xiaomi, through its Redmi brand, and Realme, who together hold a hefty 33% market share. Their success can largely be attributed to their ability to cater to the budget-conscious masses with affordable yet feature-packed devices.
However, it appears that the youth of the country are beginning to explore other options, seeking out premium features and more innovative designs. A recent report by Techarc suggests that this shift in consumer preference might lead to a significant loss in market share for Xiaomi and Realme, giving way to other players like OnePlus and Lava.

Indian Youth Gravitate Towards OnePlus
A study conducted by Techarc focusing on the smartphone buying patterns of Indian youth (up to 25 years of age), revealed that OnePlus is one of the most preferred brands in the Android segment. It also enjoys the highest retention rate, indicating that existing users are likely to stick with OnePlus for their next purchase.
The brand has built a reputation for itself as a premium smartphone provider, not only in India but worldwide. Despite having its main lineup in the premium segment, OnePlus has also started to target the mid-range market with its Nord Series.
Lava Gains Popularity Among Young Users
Following OnePlus, Lava has emerged as a strong contender in the market with high customer satisfaction ratings among young buyers. The study found that over 82% of existing Lava smartphone users expressed their intention to stick to the brand for their next purchase.
The brand's recent launches - Blaze, Agni, and Yuva Series have been designed keeping the young audience in mind, thus helping Lava increase its appeal among them. Samsung and Vivo also seem to have a satisfied customer base, though a section of these users expressed a preference for OnePlus.
Influence of the Youth in the Indian Smartphone Market
Techarc's report also points out that the purchasing decisions of the youth influence not just their own purchases but also those of their family. The youth's preference for brands like OnePlus or Lava, therefore, is likely to impact the overall device sales of these brands.
The growing popularity of these brands among the youth is likely to eat into the market share of Redmi and Realme, which are typically the go-to brands for students.
As per the study, the Indian smartphone market is anticipated to grow by a nominal 3 to 4% within the next year, with the youth expected to account for over 40% of smartphone sales in the next 12-15 months.
Apple, however, is expected to maintain its position, unaffected by the evolving user sentiments in the mid-range. As the dynamics of the Indian smartphone market continue to evolve, it becomes more crucial for brands to win over the youth, thereby securing a larger market share.
