Samsung foldable smartphone with 7.3-inch OLED display may launch in December

Samsung is rumored to have been working on a foldable smartphone for years now. Referred to as Galaxy X, the device has featured in countless number of leaks and concept designs so far.

While Samsung itself refuses to give out any details of the foldable smartphone, a new report emerging from South Korea reveals some important information regarding the device. As claimed by the publication ET News, Samsung intends to launch its first foldable phone in December this year. The report further claims that the device will have a massive 7.3-inch OLED display.

If this report is to be believed, Samsung has finally decided to start the production of the foldable OLED displays in coming March. The company will build up towards mass manufacturing in September, in preparation for manufacturing of the whole device in the following month. Whereas the official announcement and/or launch is said to take place in December this year or in early 2019.

The latest report also gives an idea of how the foldable phone from Samsung will function. Well, the device is said to fold inwards, allowing users to use it as a book. When not folded, it will appear like a regular phone or a tablet of sorts.

The 7.3-inch display of the foldable phone will be manufactured by Samsung Display. Well, no surprises there! Another interesting piece of information that has been unearthed by the report is, Samsung will show this new technology to the industry insiders in September, but behind closed doors.

As far as the pricing is concerned, the device will not be easy on pockets. It is believed that the device will be much more costlier compared to the current premium and high-end smartphones.

"The foldable phone is targeting 'super premium', both in terms of performance and price, which goes beyond the existing premium smartphone, and aims to provide the performance, design and usability that is right for the product," an industry source was quoted as saying.

Of course, it goes without saying that this is just a rumor which should be taken with a pinch of salt or two. Having said that, the publication had been right with its speculations quite a few times before.
