Samsung wins patent for a flexible screened device
Samsung might start working on hybrid devices soon.
Samsung has won another patent for an "Electronic Device Having Flexible Display," but this is a tad different from the previous patents. The new patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under publication number 20180103132, is more than a smartphone. It seems to be something that can double as a tablet, smartphone or a smart wearable.
What's more interesting is that it's designed around a device that can surpass far beyond these use cases. The company describes the patent as a single device that will have large flexible display comprised of three bodies. The first and third will be thicker compared to the middle portion, allowing for rotation and folding.
The patent shows that it would be transformable smartphones which when closed would look and act like a standard smartphone. When extended, the display will extend to form a large smartphone with the thicker portions acting as handholds. This could come in handy in various situations like interacting with the display without covering it.
Using the same folding mechanism, the device could also be used as a smart wearable. The diagrams also show that a flexible screen tech is used in a tablet form, which would fold into a smartphone-type device.
If Samsung manages to make this concept a reality, it would be a huge leap in the mobile device segment. It would offer a higher productivity and would be easy to carry around.
Speaking of patents, the company also filed for a patent that comes under the number US D813,864 S 'Wearable Electronic Device' and appears to be a wearable with that will have an ability to extend its display. More precisely, it will feature a rectangular display that will extend to double the size of the frame.
While a lot of patents usually don't make it to the mass production stage and aren't always the accurate representation of the product, this patent depicts a screen nearly identical to the watch band. It will have a curved screen that would wrap around the user's arm, extending down towards the elbow. The technical drawings also show a double loop, rather than using a conventional watch band. The device will feature an oval-shaped button on the watch frame itself, which resembles the button seen on Samsung smartphones.
