MediaTek and Qualcomm’s Next Flagship Processors to Push Performance—and Prices—Higher in 2024

The competition for the next generation of smartphone processors is ramping up as MediaTek and Qualcomm prepare to unveil their flagship chipsets for 2024. MediaTek's Dimensity 9400 is scheduled to debut on October 9, while Qualcomm is expected to launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 shortly after, potentially rebranded as the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

According to reliable tech insider Digital Chat Station (DCS), the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could carry a hefty price tag of around $190, a significant 20% increase compared to its predecessor. This puts it in stark contrast to the Dimensity 9400, which is rumored to cost roughly $155.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 vs. Dimensity 9400: Prepare for a Price Increase

While these are estimated manufacturer prices, the significant price difference between the two chips could have a ripple effect on the final cost of upcoming flagship smartphones.

Performance Powerhouse

Despite the potential price increase, both SoCs are expected to deliver blazing-fast performance. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will reportedly be the first mobile chip from Qualcomm to feature its in-house Oryon cores, promising a notable performance jump based on early benchmarks.

MediaTek's Dimensity 9400 isn't pulling any punches either. It's rumored to utilize ARM's most powerful Cortex-X925 core, recently achieving the highest AnTuTu benchmark score ever recorded for an Android phone.

Cost Justification and Consumer Impact

While the performance gains are enticing, the price hike raises questions about justification. It's likely due to the expensive N3E manufacturing process used by TSMC to produce both chips.

If manufacturers are indeed paying more for these components, as DCS suggests, the cost is likely to be passed on to consumers. This could lead to a wave of pricier flagship phones hitting the market later this year and in 2025.

Snapdragon vs. Dimensity: What's Ahead?

As these new chipsets prepare to hit the market, the rivalry between Qualcomm and MediaTek is expected to intensify. While both companies are offering high-end performance and advanced technology, it remains to be seen how the two will compare in terms of real-world usage and battery efficiency.

At the same time, the looming presence of Apple's A18 series could challenge both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400 for performance supremacy. Whether these Android chips can hold their own against Apple's processors will be a key factor to watch as benchmark comparisons start to emerge.

For now, manufacturers and consumers alike are gearing up for a year of powerful devices-albeit at a higher price.
