Huawei’s Tri-Fold Smartphone Looms as Tecno and Oppo Debut Their Concepts

Foldable smartphones, once a futuristic idea, are now at the forefront of mobile technology. As competition heats up among tech giants, the latest trend is the "Tri-Fold" smartphone-devices that fold three times, offering new possibilities in screen versatility.

Recently, Tecno and Oppo have unveiled their concepts for such devices, showcasing their innovative approaches to this emerging category.

Huawei’s Tri-Fold Smartphone Looms as Tecno & Oppo Debut Their Concept

Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2: A Closer Look

Tecno has led the charge with its Tri-Fold concept, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2. This smartphone features an expansive 10-inch LTPO OLED display, complemented by a 6.48-inch cover screen. With a resolution of 1620 x 2880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio, it aims to provide a high-quality viewing experience. Notably, the Phantom Ultimate 2 integrates Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) technology, which combines the display driver and touch sensor into a single chip. This advancement is expected to enhance display responsiveness and efficiency.

In terms of design, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 is 11mm thick, making it slightly bulkier than recent foldable models like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. However, when folded, it is thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 12.1mm in thickness. Despite this, Tecno's device maintains a slim profile, resembling other book-style foldable smartphones.

Oppo's Entry into the Tri-Fold Arena

Not to be outdone, Oppo has also revealed its Tri-Fold smartphone concept, closely following Tecno's announcement. The Oppo Tri-Fold features a sleek rectangular design with a triple display and minimal bezels. It incorporates a dual-hinge mechanism and a leather-finished back panel, although it lacks visible cutouts for a selfie camera. This omission hints at the use of under-display camera technology, which could enhance the device's aesthetics and screen real estate.

The Oppo concept appears to be a direct response to Tecno's unveiling, indicating a fast-paced race in the foldable smartphone market. While Oppo's design shares similarities with Tecno's, each company brings its unique innovations to the table.

Huawei's Upcoming Tri-Fold Smartphone

Amidst this competitive landscape, Huawei is preparing to introduce its own Tri-Fold smartphone. Scheduled for release in October 2024, Huawei's entry is anticipated to be the first commercially available device of its kind. Details about Huawei's design and features remain under wraps, but it is expected to include a dual-hinge mechanism similar to its competitors.Availability Unknown

While Tecno unveiled its Phantom Ultimate 2, the company hasn't confirmed a production timeline. We'll have to wait and see if these Tri-Fold concepts translate into actual products, and how they will perform against established foldable phone players like Samsung.
