Upcoming iOS 17 to Transform Locked iPhones into Smart Displays
With WWDC 2023 just around the corner, Apple is gearing up to unveil a host of new hardware and software updates. Among the expected announcements are the Mixed Reality Headset and enhancements to iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, MacOS, and more. According to well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman, one key feature of iOS 17 will be the ability to turn iPhones into smart displays.
Your iPhone Could Function as a Smart Display With iOS 17
Apple's iOS 17 update is set to include a new feature that transforms locked iPhones into smart displays when in landscape mode. This feature, codenamed Dawn, is designed to improve the iPhone's usability on desks and nightstands with a dark background and bright text for easy reading. It follows the introduction of lock screen widgets in iOS 16 and is part of Apple's strategy to integrate live information into its software.

In its smart display-like state, the phone could show calendar appointments, weather information, and notifications in a new style reminiscent of an independent smart display.
Other Features in iOS 17
In addition to the smart display feature, iOS 17 will also include a revamped control center, a new journaling app, changes to the Wallet app and location services, and an upgraded AirPlay feature for use in hotels and other public spaces. New features for tracking mood and assisting with low vision are also anticipated, along with the expansion of the Health app to iPadOS.
Apple is also reportedly developing a new horizontal interface for iPads and a low-cost tablet that can attach to walls and stands. However, the timeline for these developments is unclear.
iOS 17: Launch & Availability
The iOS 17 update will be unveiled at Apple's WWDC keynote on June 5 and is expected to release later in 2023.
