Upcoming Sony flagship smartphones may flaunt flexible OLED displays
Sony and LG Display to extend partnership to launch smartphones with flexible OLED displays.
Sony came up with smartphones featuring 4K resolution such as Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia Z5 Premium. These smartphones have LCD display but support 4K resolution. Going by the recent reports, the upcoming flagship - Sony Xperia XZ Pro will arrive with a 4K OLED display. In addition to this, fresh information that has surfaced online tips that the company may unveil smartphones with flexible displays in the near future.

The word from a Business Korea report citing the supply chain sources is that Sony's upcoming smartphones with flexible displays will be launched in the coming months. LG Display is said to supply the flexible OLED display panels to the company. Already, LG Display has been providing OLED panels those are used by Sony for its high-end TVs. Now, it looks like these companies have extended the partnership for the upcoming smartphones.
This report reveals that Sony might launch an upcoming Xperia flagship smartphone with a flexible OLED display. Usually, flexible screens are used on smartphones with curved edges on the display. So we can expect Sony to launch premium smartphones similar to the dual-edged curved phones such as Samsung Galaxy S9.
For now, we know that Sony Xperia XZ Pro will be the next-generation flagship smartphone from Sony. The device is believed to be launched with a 5.7-inch OLED screen with 4K resolution of 2160 x 3840 pixels. This flagship device is expected to be unveiled on February 26 at the MWC 2018 tech show in Barcelona.
At the CES 2018 tech show earlier this month, Samsung is said to have secretly showcased its foldable smartphone to the investors in a meeting. The company is expected to unveil this foldable smartphone sometime in late 2018 or early 2019. Given that Sony is also in plans to come up with foldable smartphones, we doubt if Samsung will still be the first one to come up with such a device. Already, Apple and LG have also filed patents for such flexible/foldable smartphones.
Talking about LG Display, the company has supplied OLED panels for LG G6, LG V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL. It looks like it is busy in adding new clients in order to improve the popularity of its OLED panels so that a wider range of smartphones feature the same.
