Xiaomi Redmi 5 and 5 Plus global launch slated to happen in February
Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus to be launched globally in the second half of February with this major change and it also makes sense.
Xiaomi is the pioneer when it comes to the near bezel-less smartphones as the company announced the Mi Mix with a high screen-to-body ratio and a wider 17:9 aspect ratio back in 2016. However, Xiaomi failed to take this design trend to the other devices until late last year while the other manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Vivo, Honor, Oppo, OnePlus, etc. came up with smartphones featuring 18:9 aspect ratio and full-screen design ever since the debut of 2017.
This scenario changed with the launch of the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus as the company unveiled these smartphones with the 18:9 aspect ratio display and full-screen design back in December 2017. These smartphones were so long available only in China and now it looks like the company is all set to bring them to the other markets.
The exact release date of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in the markets outside China remain unknown for now. But the Twitter-based leakster Roland Quandt has tweeted that the two devices will be launched in the global markets in the second half of February 2018.
MWC 2018 launch possible
This time frame coincides with the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 when Motorola is expected to launch the Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play and HMD is expected to unveil the global variants of the Nokia 7 and Nokia 6 (2018). As Xiaomi is said to be present at the MWC 2018 tech show, we can expect the company to unveil the Redmi 5 Plus and 5 Plus at the event.
Global variants to bring a major change
Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus global variants are said to bring a major change. The Chinese variant of these phones support only LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 34, 38, 39, 40, and 41 and miss out the LTE band 20 that is commonly used in Europe. The global variants of these Xiaomi phones are said to support the LTE band 20.
Europe release tipped
Given that the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will support the band 20, we can expect these smartphones to be launched in Europe. However, the pricing and availability information of these devices in the region remain unknown.
Specs will remain the same
Expect for the support for the LTE band 20, the global variants of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are not expected to come with any other changes. The specifications will be the same as in the Chinese models of these smartphones.
