The launch reminds us of the days when Coolpad announced Coolpad Note 3, which was the first sub Rs. 10k handset with a fingerprint scanner. This time around, the company can possibly trigger the trend of mid-segment Android smartphones offering 6GB of RAM to users.

Besides the 6GB RAM, the smartphone also offers some noteworthy specifications including a 13MP+13MP dual-camera setup, full HD screen, uni-body metal design and a Snapdragon 653 CPU. We were present at the launch event in Dubai and used the handset to test out its potential. Here's what we have to say about the Coolpad Coolplay 6 in our first impressions.

Design: Uni-body Metal Design

Design: Uni-body Metal Design

Like most of the Chinese handsets selling in sub Rs. 20,000 price-point, Coolpad Coolplay 6 also sports a uni-body metal handset, which resembles smartphones from Xiaomi, Lenovo and Honor. The smartphone also looks quite similar to Company's previous Cool1 Android handset. The handset has rounded edges and has been given a matte finish that makes it look premium and feel ergonomic in everyday life.

Coolpad Coolplay 6 has a noticeable weight to it as the handset is backed by a big 4,000 mAh battery unit. However, the big battery does not makes the handset bulky to the point that you will face any handling issues in everyday scenarios.

The ergonomic placement of the physical buttons also enables a comfortable fit in one hand. The right side of the device holds the power button and volume rockers whereas the SIM card tray is positioned on the left side. You will find a USB Type - C port and stereo speakers at the bottom of the handset and the 3.5mm audio jack is placed at top.

The smartphone also houses a fingerprint sensor underneath the dual-lens camera setup at the rear panel.

Overall, Coolpad has done a neat job in designing the handset and Coolplay 6 looks premium and feels ergonomic. However, there's nothing extraordinary about the smartphone that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Display: Bright IPS LCD screen with 1080p resolution

Display: Bright IPS LCD screen with 1080p resolution

Coolpad Cool Play 6 features a responsive and bright IPS LCD panel. The company has offered a 5.5-inch screen with 1080x1920 pixel resolution delivering a pixel count of 403 ppi. A 2.5D curved glass is offered for good viewing angles.

The screen has good level of brightness and also seems quite vibrant in most of the scenarios. The display settings allows you to tweak color balance and also features Eye care mode for a comfortable viewing experience in low-light environments.

The display has some sort of scratch resistant glass but we will soon provide the exact information about the protective glass used in the making of the handset.

Camera: 13MP+13MP dual-lens camera setup

Camera: 13MP+13MP dual-lens camera setup

Camera is one of the highlight feature of the handset. Coolplay 6 features a 13MP dual camera setup at its rear with dual tone LED flash, PDAF and HDR. The camera works on a f/2.0 aperture and also offers 4K video recording support. Up front, there is an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture.

The dual-camera setup is provided to offer bokeh effect by sensing the depth information in the pictures you capture. In real-life, the dual-lens implementation performs a good job in sensing the depth and creates an appealing bokeh mode. But the feature that impressed us the most is the camera's ability to capture good low-light shots.

The smartphone has a dedicated Night mode to deliver good low-light shots and if used with a tripod, it can capture some really good images. The 8MP selfie camera is also a good performer and comes with an effective Beauty mode.

We will evaluate the full potential of camera in our comprehensive review of the handset in the coming week.

Hardware and Software: 6GB RAM and an Octa-core CPU

Hardware and Software: 6GB RAM and an Octa-core CPU

The highlight feature of Coolpad Coolplay 6 is the amount of RAM it packs underneath. At Rs. 15,000, it holds the title of most affordable Android device with such humongous memory to handle your multitasking requirement.

A expected, there were no lags reported in our initial usage and smartphone handles multiple applications without breaking a sweat. The octa-core Snapdragon 653 processor also showed smooth and speedy processing abilities in our initial usage. For storage, Coolplay 6 offers 64GB of internal memory. Sadly, there's no microSD card slot to expand the internal storage.

As far as software is concerned, Coolplay 6 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Journey UI, the company's customized skin deployed on Android. The UI has a number of software tweaks and seems pretty smooth. Coolpad says that company wants its users to experience the latest software and will make sure that the handset gets the upcoming Android 8.0 OS via an OTA update by the end of this year.

Battery and Connectivity: Big battery and all the required connectivity features

Coolplay 6 is backed by a big 4,000 mAh battery unit that is claimed to offer up to 300 hours of standby time. For connectivity, the smartphone has the standard suite of features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM and 4G.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Coolpad Coolplay 6 can be the performance driven handset smartphone enthusiasts are looking for. A big battery, full HD screen, an octa-core CPU and the first time 6GB RAM in sub Rs. 15k price-point makes the handset a good buy in mid-range segment. The dual-lens camera setup is also a cherry on the cake.

We will give the handset a thorough check to evaluate its full potential in our detailed review. Stay tuned on GIZBOT.com
