Sony Xperia Z Ultra Hands on Review: Big Screen Entertainment with Stunning Graphics

Camera

Sony is the leading supplier of camera modules. But why Sony missed the boat with Xperia Z Ultra. The 8-megapixel rear facing camera performed fairly average as per our standard. The camera is supported by Exmor RS lens with Auto Focus and digital zoom.

The LED Flashlight is missing, so you cannot expect pictures taken at night to be phenomenal. Although there's no macro mode given, the close up details are still not par with any competing premium handset. While taking a picture from 2MP front facing camera, there's no way to zoom in close subject.

The camera UI is rather simple and easy to understand. The rear facing camera is proficient in recording videos in 1080p Full HD format.

Durability

Let's not forget that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a waterproof and dust-resistant phone. Does it make sense to have such features in a country like India? We took a challenge to check whether the Xperia Z Ultra gets thumps up or thumps down when immersed the phone in a bathtub. We left the phone submerged for a good 10 minutes. After the process got over, we found that the screen becomes practically unusable. The phone still works, but the screen erratic behavior worried us.

Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra performed fast in our tests. We would also like to add that hardware wise, the device is a must buy without a second thought. The biggest selling point of Sony Xperia Z Ultra is not its 6.4-inch FHD display, but the credit goes to Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC.
