Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter Beams Back New Images Of Moon's Surface

|

On November 14, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) released a set of new images of the moon's surface captured by Chandrayaan-2. The three-dimensional image representation showcased craters on the moon's surface. The pictures were captured by the Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TMC-2) which is equipped on the orbiter. Here are the details:

Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter Beams Back New Images Of Moon's Surface

"Have a look of 3D view of a crater imaged by TMC-2 of #Chandrayaan2. TMC-2 provides images at 5m spatial resolution & stereo triplets (fore, nadir and aft views) for preparing DEM of the complete lunar surface," reads ISRO official Twitter handle Post.

The three-dimentional pictures from TMC-2 when processed into DEM (digital elevation model), which is a 3D CG representation of a terrain's surface, provides a detailed learning about landform, shape, and structure of the lunar surface.

The 3D images show elements like craters, lava tubes, graben structure, collapsed lava tubes, lunar domes and cones from the moon. So far this is the only development ISRO announced about the newly released pictures from the moon. Hope we will get to see more developments in the near future.

Meanwhile, ISRO is also aiming for the Chandrayaan-3 Mission which is slated to launch in November 2020. K. Sivan chairperson of ISRO has already announced the organization will start working on the new mission and this time ISRO can send Indian robots along with the spacecraft.

These robots will land on the surface of the moon and study the surface and also try to discover the unexplored part of the moon. Moreover, it has also been reported that a lander will be sent along with the Chandrayaan-3 which is expected to achieve what Vikram lander supposed to do this time.

Reports suggest that ISRO is also in talks with the scientists from the Chandrayaan-2 project to study more details about the errors occur with the Vikram landing which can be rectified in the upcoming mission.
