The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has been the center of attention for quite some time now. Recently, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved the National Mobile Number Portability.

What is MNP?
Basically, this (MNP) is a service which allows the users to switch over to another mobile network operator of their choice retaining the same old number. MNP in India became available from 01 January 2011.
Who is eligible for MNP?
One can switch over to another mobile service provider only after 90 days of the date of activation of your current mobile connection. Also, with the help of MNP, it is possible to for one to change from CDMA to GSM and Vice versa.
If the customer uses postpaid connection, they have to make sure that, they have paid all the dues as
per the last bill.

As prepaid SMS is not permitted, in Jammu & Kashmir the subscriber has to dial '1900' to get a UPC, the operator at
'1900' provide the UPC after verifying subscriber number with CLI.
Step 2: Now go to the nearest mobile operator showroom along with the 8 digit auto-generated code and required document proof. You need a proof which includes ID and address proof, a passport size photo.
Step 3: Fill in the form, which will cost around Rs. 19 and get a new SIM from the shopkeeper.
Step 4: Within one day, customers will receive a message accepting the number porting. Meanwhile, the porting takes place 7th day with an SMS from the mobile operator along with the date and time for porting. The disruption will occur in your previous network for 2 hrs during mid-night.
