Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses Allegedly Listened in Without the Wake Word, Meta Says the Issue Is Now Fixed

Some Ray-Ban Meta owners say their smart glasses recorded everyday conversations without being asked. The reports started on Reddit, where one user said three pairs of second- and third-generation glasses captured chats even though nobody said "Hey Meta". The "Respond without Hey Meta" setting was also turned off at the time.

According to the user, the recordings and their transcripts later showed up in the Meta AI app. The user also noticed the glasses' LED light turning on during conversations and said the problem began after a recent firmware update. A few others on Reddit reported similar experiences.

Meta told Android Authority on October 13 that "This issue has been resolved." The company did not explain what caused the glasses to start listening, or confirm whether a firmware update was to blame. It also pointed users to the Meta AI app, where they can review and delete their voice logs.

There is no sign yet that it affected a large number of users. Still, for a product with a camera and microphones that sits on your face all day, even a small number of accidental recordings is a serious matter. That goes double for the people around you, who never agreed to be recorded.

What Ray-Ban Meta owners should do

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is sold in India from Rs 39,900 and supports Hindi commands with Meta AI, so plenty of Indian users could be affected. If you own a pair, open the Meta AI app and go through your voice history in settings. Look for any recordings you did not trigger, and delete them.

Also make sure your glasses and the app are running the latest software, since Meta's fix most likely came through an update. And if the LED lights up when you have not given a command, that is worth reporting to Meta support.

The reports come in a week when always-listening AI gadgets are in focus. Amazon has just launched new Bee wearables that record conversations all day by design. The difference is that Bee users sign up for that, while these Ray-Ban Meta owners say they did not.
