Instagram Gets New DM Features: How to Schedule Messages, Share Music, Pin Chats, Use QR Codes, and More
Instagram is rolling out a fresh batch of direct messaging (DM) features aimed at making conversations more seamless, accessible, and engaging. From instant message translation to music sharing and scheduled messages, these updates add new ways to communicate without disrupting the flow of a chat.
Whether you're trying to talk to someone in another language, share your favorite song, or pin an important message, these new tools are designed to enhance how people interact on Instagram.

Music Sharing Without Leaving the Chat
Instagram has introduced a built-in way to share music directly in DMs, making it easier to send song previews to friends without switching apps.
To share a song:
- Open the sticker tray in a DM chat.
- Tap on "Music" and search for a track from Instagram's library.
- Select the song to send a 30-second preview.
The preview will appear as a spinning vinyl sticker, and recipients can play, pause, fast-forward, or rewind the snippet without leaving the chat. This feature works in both one-on-one and group chats, making music recommendations more interactive.
Pin Important Messages in Conversations
If you've ever lost an important message in a long chat thread, this new feature is for you. Instagram now allows users to pin specific messages within a conversation, making them easier to find.
To pin a message:
- Press and hold the message.
- Tap "Pin" to keep it at the top of the chat.
You can pin up to three messages per chat, and once you reach the limit, the oldest pinned message will be replaced. This feature supports a variety of content, including:
- Text messages
- Photos and videos
- Voice notes
- GIFs and stickers
- Links and Reels
- Music and audio files
Breaking Language Barriers with Instant Message Translation
One of the most notable features in this update is message translation, which supports 99 languages. If you've ever struggled to communicate with someone who speaks a different language, Instagram now makes it easier.
To translate a message, simply:
- Press and hold the message in another language.
- Tap "Translate", and the translated text will appear below the original.
This feature is particularly useful for international conversations, travel, and even small businesses that interact with global customers. Meta does note, however, that translated messages are shared with the company to help improve its translation service.
Schedule Messages for Later
Instagram now lets users schedule messages to be sent at a specific time, a feature that's perfect for reminders, business communications, or coordinating across time zones.
To schedule a message:
- Type out your message.
- Hold down the send button until the scheduling menu appears.
- Choose a date and time, then tap Send.
The scheduled message will remain visible only to the sender until it's delivered. Users can find their scheduled messages at the bottom of the chat under "Scheduled message".
QR Code Invites for Group Chats
Instagram is also making it easier to invite people to group chats by introducing QR code invites. Instead of manually adding each person, users can now generate a QR code for a group chat, which can be scanned to join instantly.
To create a QR code for a group chat:
- Open the group conversation.
- Tap the group name at the top.
- Select "Invite link", then tap "QR code".
This feature is especially handy for large groups, event planning, or community discussions. Group admins also have the option to refresh the QR code whenever needed to manage access.
Rolling Out Gradually
These new features are gradually rolling out to iOS and Android users, with web access expected at a later date. Whether it's translating messages on the fly, scheduling important texts, or sharing music effortlessly, these updates reflect Instagram's focus on making DMs more dynamic and user-friendly.
