What is Instants and How to Use It? Can Instagram's New Feature for Ephemeral Photo Sharing Rival Snapchat
Meta has introduced Instants, a new feature for Instagram that focuses on quick, casual, and temporary photo sharing between friends. The feature is designed to encourage spontaneous interactions by letting users send unfiltered photos directly through Instagram's inbox. Alongside the in-app feature, Meta is also testing a standalone Instants app for Android and iOS in select markets for faster camera access and sharing.
Instants works similarly to Snapchat by allowing photos to disappear after they are viewed. However, Meta says the feature still uses Instagram's existing privacy protections, moderation tools, and teen safety features. The company aims to make sharing feel more personal and pressure-free compared to traditional Instagram posts and Stories.

How Instants Works on Instagram
Instants appears inside Instagram's direct messages section. Users can tap the feature, quickly capture a photo, add a short caption, and send it to Close Friends or mutual followers. Unlike regular Instagram Stories or posts, Instants focuses on minimal editing to keep interactions authentic and in-the-moment.
Once shared, the photo appears inside the recipient's inbox and automatically disappears after being viewed. Recipients can still react or reply through Instagram DMs. Meta also says screenshots and screen recordings are disabled for Instants to improve privacy.
The feature also includes a private archive where shared Instants are stored for up to one year. Users can later turn these saved moments into recap Stories. There is also an Undo option that allows users to retract a shared Instant before it is opened.
How to Use Instants on Instagram
- Open the Instagram app and go to the inbox or DM section.
- Tap the Instants icon located in the bottom-right corner.
- Capture a quick photo using the in-app camera.
- Add a short caption if needed.
- Select Close Friends or mutual followers you want to send the Instant to.
- Tap Send to share the temporary photo.
- The recipient can view the Instant once before it disappears automatically.
- Use the Undo option immediately after sending if you want to retract the photo before it is opened.
- Access your private Instants archive later to create recap Stories from older shared moments.

Meta's Standalone Instants App Explained
Meta has also announced a separate Instants app for Android and iOS, although it is currently limited to select regions. The standalone app is designed to offer faster access to the camera and uses existing Instagram account credentials for login.
According to Meta, everything shared through the standalone app stays synced with Instagram. This means users can continue viewing and replying to Instants across both platforms without needing separate accounts.
Privacy and Teen Safety Features
Meta says Instants includes the same privacy and moderation tools already available on Instagram. Users can block, mute, or restrict accounts, while shared Instants remain visible only to selected recipients.
Teen users will also receive Instagram Teen Account protections through Family Centre supervision tools. These include shared screen time limits, automatic Sleep Mode between 10pm and 7am, and parental notifications when supervised teens download the standalone Instants app.
With Instants, Meta is pushing Instagram towards more private and spontaneous social interactions. The feature combines disappearing content, quick sharing, and built-in privacy tools to create a lightweight alternative to traditional posts and Stories.
