Are Your Friends Real or Artificial? Meta Reportedly Plans to Flood Facebook and Instagram with AI Bots
Meta is reportedly planning to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) bots across its social media platforms. These AI bots will function like regular user accounts, capable of posting, sharing, and liking content. This initiative aims to integrate AI into Facebook and Instagram, enhancing user interaction. Last year, Meta allowed users in the US to create AI characters, although these cannot be made public yet.
Connor Hayes, Meta's vice president of product for generative AI, shared insights on this development. He explained that AI-powered accounts are the company's next step. "We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do," he stated. These AI accounts will resemble human profiles with bios and pictures, generating and sharing AI content.

AI Integration and Its Implications
The Financial Times highlighted Meta's efforts to incorporate AI in various ways. The company has already launched several AI tools such as the Meta AI chatbot and writing tools within Instagram DMs. Additionally, influencers and creators can use AI avatars on these platforms. These initiatives aim to make Meta's platforms more engaging amidst competition from TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).
However, experts have raised concerns regarding potential negative impacts of this move. One major issue is the risk of misinformation spreading due to numerous AI accounts driven by hallucination-prone models. This could lead to a snowball effect if not managed carefully.
Challenges with Content Quality
Another challenge is the potential influx of low-quality content on these platforms. Current AI models lack genuine creativity, which might result in a decline in content quality. If users perceive a drop in value or authenticity, they may choose to leave Facebook and Instagram.
Meta's project aims to enhance entertainment and engagement levels on its apps through increased use of AI tools and characters. This strategy is likely driven by growing competition from other social media platforms seeking user attention.
