Elon Musk Confirms Significant Changes To X Block Button, Increasing Visibility Of Public Posts
X, formerly Twitter, is set to modify its block button, as confirmed by CEO Elon Musk. In a recent post, Musk stated that public posts will be visible to everyone, even those who have been blocked. Nima Owji initially reported this news, with Musk adding, "High time this happened. The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post."
Users are now speculating about the reasons behind this change. Some believe it might be X's strategy to ensure advertisements reach everyone. Others worry it could make avoiding harassment more challenging on the platform. Musk has previously expressed his dislike for the block feature.

Changes and User Reactions
In 2023, Musk announced plans to remove the block feature except for direct messages, arguing it "makes no sense." However, users noted that blocking is essential for safety against abuse and stalking. They warned that removing it could jeopardise user safety on social media.
X has not completely eliminated the ability to block users but continues to adjust the feature. In May, they announced that if someone who blocked you replies to your post, you can now see their reply. This aligns with their goal of making the platform a "public town square."
Platform Evolution Under Musk
Since Musk took over in 2022, Twitter has undergone several changes, including renaming it as X. One significant update was transforming the verified checkmark into a subscription service. Additionally, X faced a temporary ban in Brazil due to non-compliance with court orders and unpaid fines but resumed operations after switching to Cloudflare.
Musk's history with the block button reflects his broader vision for X/Twitter. He aims to create an open platform where all voices can be heard without restrictions on viewing content. This approach has sparked debates about balancing openness with user safety.
The ongoing adjustments to X/Twitter's features highlight its evolving nature under Musk's leadership. As changes continue, users remain divided on whether these updates enhance or hinder their experience on the platform.
