Facebook Gets ChatGPT-Like Search: Meta AI Now Answers Questions from Public Posts

Meta is rolling out a major AI-powered upgrade to Facebook search with the introduction of AI Mode. The new feature uses Meta AI to answer user queries by pulling information from public Facebook content, including posts, Groups, and Reels.

Instead of typing keywords and scrolling through results, users can ask questions in natural language and receive AI-generated answers based on conversations already taking place across the platform. The move is part of Meta's broader effort to integrate AI more deeply into Facebook.

AI Mode Turns Facebook Into a Community-Powered Search Engine

AI Mode could significantly change how people find information on Facebook. While search has traditionally played a smaller role than feeds, Groups, and recommendations, Meta now wants to turn its vast collection of public discussions into a searchable knowledge base.

The feature may be especially useful for topics that rely on real-world experiences, local recommendations, and community opinions. Rather than browsing multiple posts, users can get summarized answers generated from relevant discussions.

However, the approach comes with risks. Public posts are not always verified, current, or accurate. If Meta AI summarizes misleading or outdated content, users could receive unreliable answers. Similar concerns have been raised about AI-generated search results on other platforms.

Meta's Broader Push Toward AI Discovery

The launch aligns with Meta's wider strategy of making community content easier to discover through AI.

The company has already tested similar ideas in its Forum app, which includes an AI-powered "Ask" feature that generates answers using discussions from Facebook Groups. AI Mode brings that concept directly into Facebook, potentially making billions of public conversations more accessible.

New AI Features for Photos, Stories, and Videos

Search is only one part of the update. Meta is also introducing new AI-powered creative tools for Facebook users.

The company is adding AI photo presets that can modify outfits, hairstyles, and accessories in images. Available through the "AI Edit" option in Stories, the tools include a "Wear It" feature that lets users virtually try on items such as sports jerseys.

Facebook is also rolling out video editing features, including collage cutouts and transition effects designed to simplify content creation.

Facebook's Growing AI Toolkit

These additions build on several AI features introduced throughout the year.

In February, Meta launched animated profile pictures that transform static images into short animations. In March, it introduced an AI-powered Marketplace assistant that can automatically respond to buyer messages for sellers.

Meta Just Turned Facebook into an AI Search Engine

More recently, Meta unveiled an AI assistant for creators that offers personalized recommendations based on content performance. The tool can suggest posting times and summarize audience feedback from comments.

Why Meta Is Betting Big on AI

Meta's AI push is about more than convenience. The company wants Facebook to become a hub for search, content creation, commerce, and creator management.

By encouraging users to ask questions, create content, and manage communities within Facebook, Meta can increase engagement and keep users inside its ecosystem longer.

There is also a business opportunity. Meta has begun rolling out subscription plans across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp starting at $3.99 per month. AI-powered premium features could become an important part of those offerings in the future.

Can Users Trust AI Answers?

The success of AI Mode will largely depend on trust. While the feature can surface useful insights from Groups, Reels, and public discussions more quickly than traditional search, Meta must ensure users can distinguish between community opinions and verified information.

How effectively the company addresses misinformation and content quality concerns will determine whether AI Mode becomes a valuable search tool or just another AI experiment.
