Facebook and Instagram services were restored after users across India and various parts of the world reported an outage on Tuesday, March 5, evening. The incident, which saw people facing login issues and being unable to refresh their Instagram feeds, prompted concerns among the user base.

Additionally, some individuals encountered prompts to change their passwords. The disruption extended to YouTube users shortly after, experiencing similar problems.

The outage began around 8:30 pm on Tuesday, with users receiving error messages such as "Log in again; session expired; couldn't refresh feed" while attempting to access Facebook and Instagram.

Downdetector.com, a website that monitors online service disruptions, recorded a significant number of outage reports for both platforms. Facebook saw over 300,000 reports, whereas Instagram had more than 20,000 complaints. Moreover, Reuters reported that the WhatsApp Business application programming interface also encountered issues, with around 200 outage reports noted on Downdetector.

Meta's Response and Restoration of Services

By 10 pm on Tuesday, the services were back online. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, acknowledged the problem. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone conveyed through a post on X (formerly Twitter), "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."

This swift action aimed to reassure users and restore functionality across Meta's suite of applications. The outage spurred a flurry of reactions on X, with many users expressing fears of a cyberattack or hacking. Amidst the confusion, speculations of a cyberattack circulated, highlighted by a user named Fawad Rehman who posted, "Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are down. #CyberAttack".

In a light-hearted jab at Meta's expense, X owner Elon Musk remarked, "If you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working," attracting attention amidst the outage chaos. As services returned to normal, the incident underscored the widespread reliance on these platforms for daily communication and the swift response required by tech giants to address such disruptions.
