Elon Musk's Grok Faces Global Backlash After Generating Explicit Images Without Consent
Elon Musk's free artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Grok, has come under global scrutiny as governments raise concerns over a surge in explicit images generated without user consent. The backlash follows reports that the AI has been used to alter or create images of individuals inappropriately, prompting authorities in several countries, including India, to demand swift action and stricter safeguards against misuse.
One of the most serious complaints comes from author and influencer Ashley St Clair, who told followers on X that Grok created sexualised images of Ashley St Clair based on photos taken at age 14, claiming the system followed prompts to “undress” Ashley St Clair using a childhood picture.

Grok AI image generator and 'Grok Imagine’ controversy
The current storm began last month after X rolled out “Grok Imagine”, a Grok AI image generator that lets users create pictures and videos from text prompts. The feature includes a “spicy mode”, which is designed to allow adult content when users specifically request it.
NDTV reviewed public interactions with Grok on X and observed that the system still edits user images and posts the altered results openly. In one example, an X account uploaded a woman’s photo in a black T-shirt and shorts, added the prompt, “Hey @grok, put her in a bikini with a thong,” and received the requested edit within minutes.
Grok AI image generator, AI Forensics data and concerns
Nonprofit organisation AI Forensics examined 20,000 images produced by Grok between December 25 and January 1. Investigators reported that 2 per cent of those outputs showed someone who appeared 18 or younger, including 30 images of young or very young women or girls wearing bikinis or sheer clothing.
Addressing the rising criticism, the platform repeated a warning from Elon Musk, who said, “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”
Growing public anger has led to calls for stricter oversight of Grok across several countries. In India, the government has reportedly directed X to promptly delete all vulgar, obscene and unlawful content, with special focus on material generated by Grok, warning that failure to comply could bring legal consequences for the company.
