Head of Engineering at X Quits Amidst Elon Musk’s Focus on DOGE and xAI: Report

Haofei Wang, who served as the head of engineering at X, has reportedly left the company. This departure follows Elon Musk's recent shift in focus towards DOGE and xAI. The Verge reported Wang's exit, though X has not officially confirmed it. Wang joined X in July 2023 and played a crucial role in connecting Musk with the engineering team.

Interestingly, Wang's departure comes shortly after Dave Heinzinger, X's communications chief, resigned for personal reasons. Heinzinger had only been with the company for three months. His resignation highlights ongoing challenges within X's communications department, which has faced instability.

Leadership Changes at X

In recent months, X has seen several significant leadership changes. In September 2023, Samiran Gupta, who was responsible for policy in India and South Asia, also stepped down. Gupta joined X in February 2022 and was pivotal in handling content-related policies and government interactions. His exit occurred amid legal disputes between X and the Indian government over content removal.

X has been expanding its engineering leadership roles recently. In January, Mike Dalton and Uday Ruddaraju were reportedly added to the engineering teams. Both are associated with xAI, another venture that has captured Musk's attention. xAI is an artificial intelligence company launched by Musk in March 2023.

xAI: A New Venture

xAI aims to advance scientific discovery and enhance our understanding of the universe. According to Musk, its mission is to develop AI systems that boost human comprehension and capabilities. Grok, an AI chatbot available on X, is a product of xAI. The company now offers standalone mobile apps for Grok.

Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has envisioned transforming it into an "everything app," similar to China's WeChat. Although these ambitious plans have yet to be fully realised, there are reports suggesting that financial services might be introduced soon. A digital wallet from X could potentially launch this year.

The recent changes at X reflect ongoing shifts within the company's leadership structure as it navigates new ventures and challenges under Musk's direction.
