Instagram Rolls Out Major Edits Update With New Creator Templates, Widgets, and Remix Support
Instagram is expanding its in-house video editing app, Edits, with a fresh wave of tools. The latest update adds ready-made templates, storyboards, extra text controls, and a lock screen widget for iOS. Users in some regions can already try these additions while others wait for wider rollout.
Instagram says more template formats and creative tools are on the way for Edits. A dedicated templates section will appear for selected creators in countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. Instagram has not yet confirmed if these new template types will reach users in India.

New Templates and Storyboards in Instagram Edits App
A post from the Instagram Creators account on Threads outlines how Edits now supports quick video building with new templates. These allow creators to combine popular music, varied fonts, and timed clips in one place. Users can also turn their own layouts into templates that others can reuse, starting this week.
The update also adds a storyboard feature inside Edits. Idea stickies can now turn into tidy storyboards for video planning. Creators can arrange teleprompter prompts, clip lists, and notes inside one view. Projects in Edits can also use public Reels from Instagram, so users can remix, react, or adjust them, while keeping credit for the original creator.
Customisation Tools and iOS Widget for Instagram Edits App
Text controls inside Edits now include an option to add a secondary colour. This can appear behind the text or around its outline, giving captions more contrast. On iPhones, Instagram Edits also supports lock screen widgets. These give fast access to the Edits camera or let users drop sticky notes straight into the app.
Instagram first released the Edits app in April. Since launch, the company has steadily grown the feature set for creators. In October, Edits gained special video effects. In November, Instagram added support for Indian fonts, helping creators in India design text in local languages directly inside the app.
| Feature | Details | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| New templates | Use popular music, fonts, and timed clips; shareable templates | Select countries from this week |
| Storyboard tool | Turns idea stickies into structured plans with cues, clips, and notes | Within Edits app |
| Public Reels support | Add public Reels to projects for remix, reactions, or edits | Original creators credited |
| Text secondary colour | Extra colour for text background or outline | Latest update |
| iOS lock screen widget | Quick access to Edits camera and sticky notes | iPhone users |
These changes show Instagram is turning Edits into a broader creative space, beyond simple trimming tools. While some features, especially advanced templates, are limited to specific countries, Indian users already benefit from Indian font support and new effects. Future updates could further align Edits with the needs of creators in India.
