Instagram Introduces Map Feature in India, Helping You See Where Friends Are Posting From

Instagram is rolling out its Map feature in India, giving users a new way to connect with friends through shared locations and tagged posts. The feature was first introduced globally in August and is now arriving in India with a few thoughtful updates aimed at improving privacy, clarity, and usability.

A New Way to Discover and Connect

The new Map feature lets you share your last active location with friends you choose. You can open the Map to explore where your friends or favorite creators have posted from — whether it’s a café, a vacation spot, or a concert venue. It’s designed as a lightweight way to stay connected through places, not just posts.

Importantly, location sharing is completely optional. You can choose which friends can see your last active spot, or turn the feature off entirely whenever you like.

Updates for Better Privacy and Clarity

Instagram has made a few changes since the feature’s initial launch, focusing on transparency around how location data is used.

You’ll now see a clear indicator at the top of the Map showing whether your location sharing is on or off. There’s also a small indicator below your profile photo in the Notes tray that reminds you if location sharing is disabled.

To avoid confusion, Instagram has removed profile photos from appearing over tagged content on the Map. Some users had mistakenly assumed that posting content with a location tag automatically shared their live location — something this update aims to clarify.

Additionally, when you add a location tag to a story, reel, or post, you’ll now see a preview of how that content will appear on the Map before posting.
