Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, recently dismissed around 24 employees at its Los Angeles offices. These staff members were reportedly using their $25 meal credits to purchase non-food items like toothpaste and wine glasses. The tech giant, valued at £1.2 trillion and owning WhatsApp, conducted an investigation that revealed this misuse of meal credits.
One employee earning $400,000 annually admitted to buying household goods with these credits. On the anonymous platform Blind, they confessed: "On days where I would not be eating at the office, like if my husband was cooking or if I was grabbing dinner with friends, I figured I ought not to waste the dinner credit." This admission came during a human resources inquiry into the practice.

Employee Perks Under Scrutiny
Meta's decision to terminate these employees aligns with a broader restructuring plan involving layoffs and relocations within its WhatsApp and Instagram divisions. The company has been undergoing significant changes, having already cut 21,000 jobs in 2022 and 2023. By June this year, Meta had approximately 70,799 employees.
Free meals have long been a benefit for workers at major tech firms. At Meta's larger offices, such as its Silicon Valley headquarters, staff enjoy complimentary meals from canteens. However, employees at smaller locations receive daily credits for food delivery services like UberEats and Grubhub.
Changes in Meal Policies
The daily allowances include $20 for breakfast and $25 each for lunch and dinner. In 2022, Meta faced backlash after delaying its free dinner service by half an hour to 6:30 pm at its Silicon Valley campus. This change meant fewer employees could dine on-site if they caught the last shuttle leaving at 06:00 pm.
Other tech giants are also reassessing employee perks. Google reduced fitness classes and limited laptop replacements last year. They also tightened controls on office supplies like staplers and tape, requiring staff to borrow them from reception desks.
Impact on Employee Morale
The recent dismissals at Meta highlight how some employees misused their meal credits for items such as acne pads. Those who occasionally broke the rules received warnings but retained their positions. Such incidents underscore the challenges companies face in managing employee benefits effectively.
Meta's restructuring efforts reflect broader trends in the tech industry as companies navigate economic pressures while maintaining employee satisfaction. As these firms adjust their policies, balancing cost-cutting measures with employee morale remains crucial.
