Meta is Ending End-to-End Encryption on Instagram From May 2026: Why It Matters

Instagram is planning a major privacy change for chats, as end-to-end encryption will stop working after May 8. From May 9, Meta will technically be able to read and listen to messages sent or received on Instagram, which alters how private conversations on the service remain.

What Is End-to-End Encryption and Why It Matters

End-to-end encryption, often shortened to E2EE, is meant to protect chats so that outsiders cannot access them. As Instagram explains, E2EE ensures "only you and the people you're communicating with can see or listen to what is sent, and no one else, not even Meta, can do so".

Meta once promoted end-to-end encryption as a key security feature across services. It was not very long ago that Meta-owned platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram highlighted how E2EE would cover private chats. Now Instagram is moving in the opposite direction by choosing to withdraw that protection.

End-to-End Encryption on Instagram Set to End After May 8

Instead of posting a detailed blog or formal announcement, Instagram has quietly edited its online help section to reflect the shift. The updated support page now states that E2EE will not be supported after May 8, signalling that encrypted messaging on Instagram is reaching an official end on that date. Meta told The Verge ""very few people" were using end-to-end encryption in their DMs.

On the same help page, Instagram tells affected users, "if you have chats that are impacted by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages you may want to keep". After May 9, Meta, and any government bodies that request data, will be able to access those Instagram communications.
