Meta Introduces New Features in Threads to Celebrate 500 Million User Milestone

Meta has announced that Threads has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, marking a major milestone for the social platform as it continues its push to become a serious competitor to X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the growth announcement, the company unveiled several new features focused on community building and feed personalization.

The latest updates are aimed at helping users discover interest-based conversations more easily while offering greater control over the content they see. For markets like India, where Threads has gained traction through creators, fandoms, and real-time discussions, the changes could make the platform more engaging and organized.

Meta’s Threads Celebrate 500 Million Users with New Features

Threads Communities Exit Beta

Meta revealed that Threads Communities, first introduced in beta last year, are now rolling out more broadly. The feature allows users to participate in discussions centered around specific interests, including books, sports, parenting, music, and more.

To improve discoverability, communities will now be housed in a dedicated hub accessible from the main menu. Meta is also introducing separate icons for communities, making them easier to identify across the app.

Another addition is Community Progress, a feature that shows when a discussion topic is close to becoming a standalone community and highlights actions users can take to support its growth. The company is also expanding its Community Champion program to recognize more active contributors.

Local Communities and Live Chats Get an Upgrade

As part of its broader community strategy, Meta is launching local communities with native-language tags in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. While the company has not announced similar support for India yet, the move signals a stronger focus on regional engagement across Asia.

Threads is also expanding Live Chats to more communities in the coming weeks. The feature will support co-hosting and allow participants to quote specific moments directly to the main feed, making community discussions more interactive.

'Your Algo' Gives Users More Control Over Recommendations

Meta is introducing a new personalization tool called Your Algo, designed to give users temporary control over the content recommended in their Threads feed.

With the feature, users can choose to see more or less of specific topics for one, three, or seven days. The adjustments remain private and are visible only to the user.

Your Algo builds on Dear Algo, a feature launched earlier this year that lets users directly influence recommendations by signaling content preferences. Both tools will now be accessible from a single control hub.

However, the new feature will initially be available only in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Meta Bets on Communities for Threads' Future

The latest updates highlight Meta's strategy to evolve Threads beyond a traditional social feed and into a network of topic-driven communities. By combining community-focused features with greater personalization controls, the company hopes to improve user retention and encourage more meaningful conversations.

While Indian users will benefit from the expanded Communities experience and Live Chats, they will have to wait longer for the rollout of Your Algo. Nevertheless, Threads' latest milestone and feature set indicate that Meta is increasingly positioning the platform as a destination for public conversations rather than just an Instagram companion app.
