Meta Launches Passkeys for Facebook, Enabling Password-free Login and Enhanced Security

Facebook has introduced passkeys as a new login method for Android and iOS users, aiming to enhance security and simplify the login process. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys are cryptographic keys stored securely on a user's device. This approach helps protect against online threats like phishing and credential theft. The announcement was made by Meta, Facebook's parent company, highlighting the shift towards password-free security.

Initially, this feature is available for the Facebook app on mobile devices, with plans to extend it to Messenger soon. Meta also intends to support other uses such as secure access to encrypted chats and autofill payment credentials through Meta Pay. Users can log in using their smartphone's fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN, eliminating the need for complex passwords.

Understanding Facebook's Passkeys

Passkeys are developed under the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance to improve digital security. They are unique cryptographic keys stored on a user's device, offering strong resistance to phishing and brute-force attacks. Once enabled, users can sign in by unlocking their device without transmitting biometric data to Facebook; all authentication details remain securely stored on the device.

Currently, passkeys are available only for smartphone users accessing Facebook. Desktop or web browser users must still enter their username and password manually until broader support is implemented. To enable passkeys, users can navigate to the 'Accounts Centre’ within the Facebook app settings or receive a prompt during login.

Additional Security Features with Passkeys

Beyond simplifying sign-in, passkeys will enable additional security functionalities on Facebook. Users will soon be able to unlock encrypted backups in Messenger and securely autofill payment information through Meta Pay. These enhancements align with emerging security standards while providing greater convenience for users.

Despite moving towards passwordless authentication, traditional methods will remain available for those using non-compatible devices. Users can continue using passwords as a fallback option if needed.
