Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp is reportedly contemplating launching paid versions of its social media platforms. These subscriptions will strip out all ads and assure users their data will not be mined for targeted advertising.

Attempting to address growing privacy concerns mainly stemming from the need to collect user data, Meta could soon offer ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram. Let's look at the latest developments to see how they could impact social media platforms.

Paid Versions of Facebook, Instagram For Users Worried About Privacy?

Meta To Offer Paid And Ad-Free Access To Its Social Media Platforms?

Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and several other frontend and backend platforms. However, the company's major source of revenue has been through advertisements.

Needless to add, for the advertisements to work well, Meta collects large amounts of user data. This aspect has always been a growing concern among privacy advocates. EU antitrust regulators have been observing Meta.

The social media giant even lost a legal battle in Germany as the latter barred Meta from collecting users' data without consent. Meta has been fined NOK 1 million (approx. ₹77,51,000) per day since August 14 for breaching users' privacy by harvesting user data and using it to target advertising at them. Meta is trying to get a temporary injunction against the order.

Meta is reportedly trying to address or perhaps circumvent these privacy concerns and legal issues by offering completely ad-free versions of its popular social media platforms.

How Will Ad-Free Subscription To Facebook And Instagram Help Meta And Its Users?

Meta may offer subscriptions to Facebook and Instagram similar to Netflix's original subscriptions which were devoid of ads. These paid versions will not include ads.

The social media giant has a two-pronged approach to address and combat privacy concerns and the ongoing scrutiny from the EU about user data harvesting for targeted advertisements.

The paid versions will not have ads. Hence, the users who opt to pay won't have their data harvested. Secondly, Meta can claim it gives users an alternative to the company's ad-based services that have to analyze people's data to earn.

Incidentally, Meta is expected to continue offering free versions of the apps with ads. It is important to note that Meta hasn't confirmed or denied these developments.

It is not clear how much would Meta charge to offer ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the company might also develop some ways to identify paying users and reward them with recognizable badges.
