Reddit Sues Perplexity Over Alleged Illegal Data Scraping

Reddit has initiated legal action against artificial intelligence startup Perplexity in a New York federal court. The lawsuit accuses Perplexity and three other companies of illegally extracting data from Reddit to train its AI-based search engine. This case is part of a broader trend where content owners are challenging tech firms over the alleged misuse of copyrighted material for AI training.

"AI companies are locked in an arms race for quality human content - and that pressure has fueled an industrial-scale 'data laundering' economy," stated Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer. Reddit claims that its platform, featuring numerous interest-based "subreddit" communities, is frequently cited as a source for AI-generated responses to user inquiries.

Reddit Sues Perplexity Over Alleged Illegal Data Scraping

Reddit's Allegations Against Data-Scraping Companies

According to the complaint, Reddit alleges that the data-scraping companies bypassed its data protection measures to obtain information essential for Perplexity's "answer engine" system. The lawsuit also names Lithuania-based Oxylabs, Russia-based AWMProxy, and Texas-based SerpApi as entities involved in scraping Reddit data from billions of search results without authorization.

Perplexity responded by stating, "Our approach remains principled and responsible as we provide factual answers with accurate AI, and we will not tolerate threats against openness and the public interest." Meanwhile, SerpApi expressed disagreement with Reddit's claims and plans to defend itself vigorously in court.

Previous Legal Actions by Reddit

This isn't Reddit's first legal battle over data scraping. In June, Reddit filed a similar lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic, which is still ongoing. The company has also licensed its content to major players like Google and OpenAI for their AI training purposes.

Oxylabs expressed surprise at the lawsuit, stating it was "shocked and disappointed by this news, as Reddit has made no attempt to speak with us directly." The company intends to contest the allegations in court. This situation highlights the growing tension between content creators and tech companies over data usage rights.

The outcome of this case could have significant implications for how AI companies access and use online content. As more lawsuits emerge in this area, the legal landscape surrounding AI training practices continues to evolve.
