Transparency on X: New Labels Distinguish Parody Accounts from Genuine Profiles
X, previously known as Twitter, has introduced new labels for parody or satire accounts. These labels were initially launched last year to help users identify different account types. The latest 'Parody Account' label aims to separate parody profiles from genuine ones, enhancing content transparency and reducing impersonation. This move aligns with the platform's authenticity policy.
The introduction of these labels was highlighted on X's safety account through a post. According to the company, the 'Parody Account' label will be displayed beneath the profile and on posts. This feature helps users differentiate between real individuals and their parody counterparts, eliminating confusion and any false association.

Enhancing Transparency with Parody Labels
"We're rolling out profile labels for parody accounts to clearly distinguish these types of accounts and their content on our platform. We designed these labels to increase transparency and to ensure that users are not deceived into thinking such accounts belong to the entity..." - Safety (@Safety) January 10, 2025
The platform clarifies that it will show the origin of content visible to others in line with its Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) regulation. This regulation allows parody accounts to discuss, satirise, and share information without requiring users to reveal their real identities. However, it prohibits impersonating individuals or organisations with deceptive intent.
Voluntary Adoption of Parody Labels
In November, reverse engineers discovered that parody account labels were under development. Currently, these labels are optional for users but may become mandatory later. Users can apply them by going to Settings and Privacy > Your account > Account information and selecting the "Parody, commentary and fan account" label.
Elon Musk, who owns the platform, has been a strong supporter of such identifiers. In 2022, he stressed that "accounts engaged in parody must include 'parody' in their name, not just in bio". This stance underscores his commitment to maintaining clarity between authentic and parody profiles.
Reporting Inauthentic Accounts
If any accounts are suspected of being fake or impersonating an entity, X users have the option to report them via the app or Help Centre. This feature ensures that users can actively participate in maintaining the platform's integrity by flagging misleading profiles.
The introduction of these labels marks a step towards clearer identification of account types on X. By distinguishing parody accounts from authentic ones, X aims to foster a more transparent environment for its users while adhering to its authenticity guidelines.
