Massive Tech Layoffs: Over 10,000 Employees Reportedly Impacted in 2025 Alone

In 2025, major technology companies like Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Google, and Salesforce are continuing to reduce their workforce. These job cuts are part of ongoing restructuring and performance optimisation efforts. Reports indicate that over 10,800 employees have been affected so far this year. The trend of layoffs that began in 2022 has persisted through 2023 and 2024, with no signs of abating in the current year.

Microsoft was among the first to announce layoffs this year. The company confirmed job cuts across various divisions, including its security division. These layoffs primarily targeted employees who did not meet performance expectations. Despite global restructuring efforts, Puneet Chandok, head of Microsoft's India and South Asia operations, assured that India's operations would remain unaffected.

Why Are Tech Companies Laying Off Thousands of Employees?

Meta's Workforce Reduction Plans

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plans to lay off around 3,600 employees. This figure represents about 5% of its workforce and adds to a similar reduction announced in December 2024. CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained these cuts as part of "raising the bar on performance management" and removing low-performing staff during an "intense year" of operational changes.

Amazon has also continued its layoff trend that started in 2022. The company recently announced job cuts within its communications and sustainability divisions. Although the exact number is undisclosed, an internal memo obtained by CNBC revealed that these layoffs aim to eliminate narrowly defined roles and unnecessary organisational layers.

Salesforce's Restructuring Efforts

Salesforce has joined other tech companies in downsizing its workforce in 2025. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to cut over 1,000 positions as part of ongoing restructuring efforts. However, Salesforce is also looking to hire more employees for its AI-driven product expansion. Laid-off employees may have opportunities to apply for other internal roles.

Google has not directly announced job cuts but introduced a voluntary exit program for its Platforms & Devices division employees. This division handles key products like Android, Pixel, Chrome, Nest, and Fitbit. Senior Vice President Rick Osterloh communicated this program through an internal memo offering severance packages to U.S.-based employees who choose to leave.

The tech industry continues facing uncertainties with ongoing layoffs in 2025. Companies are focusing on restructuring while expanding roles in artificial intelligence. As more job cuts are expected throughout the year, affected employees may need to explore new opportunities within or outside their current organisations.
