TikTok Ban In India: No Government Directive For Unblocking Despite Speculation
Recent reports have led to speculation about TikTok's potential return to India. Some users noticed partial access to TikTok's website via desktop browsers. However, a source informed PTI that the Indian government has not issued any directive to unblock the app. "The Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement or news is false and misleading," the source stated.
In June 2020, India banned TikTok along with 58 other Chinese apps. This decision followed border tensions in Ladakh's Galwan Valley. The government cited concerns over national sovereignty and integrity as reasons for the ban. Other apps like WeChat, Weibo, Clash of Kings, and CamScanner were also included in this prohibition.

Concerns Over Data Security
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) highlighted issues related to data misuse. They received complaints about user data being transferred to servers outside India. "The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures," stated the ministry.
Before its ban, TikTok had amassed over 120 million users in India, marking it as a significant market globally. Following the ban, TikTok expressed a willingness to work with authorities to ensure user safety. However, no further comments were made by the company's spokesperson regarding this matter.
Background on App Ban
The initial ban on Chinese apps was part of broader security measures taken by India. The government aimed to protect national interests amid rising geopolitical tensions. These actions reflected concerns over digital sovereignty and data privacy.
The situation remains unchanged as no official steps have been taken towards lifting the ban on TikTok in India. The government continues to prioritise national security concerns over potential app reinstatement.
