Twitter Is Reportedly Testing a Verification Feature Requiring Users’ Government Id
Days after the Twitter Blue subscription rolled out in India, the micro-blogging site is reportedly testing a new verification feature for its Twitter Blue subscribers where users will be required to submit their government ID.
Product intelligence organization Watchful.ai broke this news through code-level insights.
The company said that they found this feature being tested in Twitter's Android app in the US.

There is no information as yet as to whether this feature is underway in other regions as well. The company also stated that it couldn't tell if the verification feature was already visible to if any, Twitter Blue subscribers.
However, the company shared screenshots where one of the features listed reads "ID Verification" among other regular features availed to Twitter Blue subscribers, such as Edit Tweet and Undo Tweet.
As per the screenshots shared by Watchful.ai, the verification feature involves the user submitting a front and back copy of their user ID, along with their selfie, to authenticate and safeguard their accounts.
Another screenshot shared by the company has Twitter mentioning that the verification process only takes three minutes and that the Twitter Blue users' details would be shared with a third-party vendor in charge of the authentication process.
Twitter has been in the eye of the storm ever since it decided to monetize its Twitter-verified blue tick feature by introducing a paid subscription for its Twitter blue tickmark.
The move resulted in online mayhem, with many users impersonating others, especially high-profile individuals and organizations.
In a bid to normalize the situation, Twitter introduced a gold checkmark feature for businesses and an "official badge" for high-profile individuals to be able to verify themselves.
Therefore, it seems like Twitter has decided to incorporate an ID check as another layer of security that validates all Twitter Blue users and prevents identity theft.
However, we need to wait as further details regarding the verification feature emerge.
