Foxconn Will Reportedly Start Assembling Apple iPads in India

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant, is set to broaden its operations in India by assembling Apple iPads at its facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This development marks a significant expansion for Foxconn, which has primarily focused on assembling iPhones in India up to now.

According to a recent report from The Economic Times, Foxconn has been in discussions with the Indian government regarding this move. The discussions have reportedly been promising, suggesting that the assembly of iPads in India could commence by the latter part of 2025.

Expansion Strategy and Production Details

The transition to assembling iPads in India is seen as a natural extension of Foxconn's existing capabilities. The assembly processes for iPads are comparable to those used for iPhones, which means that Foxconn's current expertise will be beneficial.

Initially, iPads may be assembled in a Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) format, where components are partially assembled before final assembly. Over time, the process is expected to shift towards Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units, similar to current iPhone production practices.

This phased approach will allow Foxconn to scale up production efficiently and manage the complexities of transitioning to new product lines. While assembling MacBooks in India is also part of the long-term plan, this will require more intricate facilities and is not expected to begin immediately.

Impact of Government Policies and Incentives

The Indian government's recent decision to lower the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on mobile phones and related components to 15% is expected to positively impact the decision to assemble iPads in India.

This policy change, along with the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, which includes tablets, will support the economic feasibility of this expansion. The incentives are designed to bolster local manufacturing and attract foreign investment in the technology sector.

Apple's Broader Diversification Efforts

Apple's move to increase iPad production in India is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing. Last year, Apple began shifting some of its iPad production to Vietnam, further indicating its strategy to diversify its supply chain.

This expansion into India complements these efforts, allowing Apple to mitigate risks associated with over-dependence on any single country.

Benefits and Future Prospects

The expansion of iPad assembly in India is expected to benefit both Foxconn and Apple in several ways. For Foxconn, it provides an opportunity to leverage existing facilities and expertise while contributing to the growth of India's high-tech manufacturing sector.

For Apple, it aligns with its goal to enhance production capabilities and manage global supply chain challenges more effectively.

Additionally, the increased focus on India will help Apple tap into the growing domestic market, with iPad shipments globally projected to reach 49 million units this year. This expansion is also expected to bolster India's position in the global electronics supply chain, with Foxconn potentially manufacturing other high-tech products, such as AI servers and Google Pixel smartphones, at the same facility.
