Computex 2023: Here Are The Biggest Announcements In The World Of Computers And PC Business

Computex is one of the biggest and most anticipated events dedicated to the world of computing and the PC business. The mega-event has once again returned to its former glory after the pandemic.

Happening from May 30 to June 2, this year's Computex has so far had a star-studded cast including Intel, ARM, NVIDIA, Asus, and AMD. Let's look at the biggest announcements from these tech giants.

Computex 2023: Here Are The Biggest Announcements

ARM Announced Cortex-X4, Its Fastest Mobile CPU And Revised big.LITTLE Cluster

ARM introduced new CPUs in the Prime, Power, and Efficiency categories. The CPU unveiled the high-power Cortex-X4, middle Cortex-A720, and small Cortex-A520.

The new Cortex-X4 is the "Prime" core, which boasts the highest clock speeds in any CPU cluster. Intended for heavy single-threaded tasks, the Cortex-X4 is expected to reach peak clock speeds of 3.4GHz.

The Cortex-A720 CPU cores are optimized for efficiency and will be the most active CPUs in any big.LITTLE CPU cluster. They are better than the A700 cores. The A720 is claimed to be 20 percent more efficient than the A715, which itself was 20 percent more efficient than the A710.

The Cortex-A520 is designed so that two cores can share execution units to take up as little space on the silicon as possible. The other design goal was to reduce power consumption and the A520 is claimed to be 22 percent more efficient than the A510.

The majority of high-end chipsets have an octa-core CPU cluster with 1+3+4 or 1+4+3 configurations. This standard configuration will likely change to 1+5+2. Moreover, ARM has dropped support for the old 32-bit ARM instruction set.

Intel Announced 14th Gen Core Family 'Meteor Lake' CPUs With Integrated 'VPUs'

Intel demonstrated its latest Meteor Lake CPUs at the ongoing Computex 2023 event. These are capable of offering on-device or local AI Acceleration. These 14th-Gen CPUs pack what's referred to as VPUs or Vision Processing Units.

Intel teased details of its upcoming 'Meteor Lake' CPU architecture. The architecture should be released as part of the 14th Gen Intel Core family starting later this year.

Intel offered a preview of a prototype laptop running an unidentified Meteor Lake engineering sample CPU. The CPU had AI inference processing capabilities. In addition to CPU and GPU cores, Meteor Lake introduces a new VPU (Vision Processing Unit) for AI acceleration.

Intel claims users can expect to experience things such as far better background separation on video calls, automatic voice isolation and enhancement, superior language understanding and synthesis for interactions, real-time motion capture, and radically reimagined user interfaces that adapt to what the user is doing, all in the near future.

NVIDIA Showcased GH200 Grace Hopper, DGX GH200, And More

NVIDIA showcased multiple products and platforms that majorly revolve around Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI. Needless to mention, these will benefit tools and services such as ChatGPT, Bard, Dall-E, and many more.

Huang showcased the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper. The super-chip boosts 4 PetaFIOPS TE, 72 Arm CPUs connected by chip-to-chip link, 96GB HBM3, and 576 GPU memory.

NVIDIA also showcased its NVIDIA DGX GH200, which is essentially a supercharged GH200. The super-chip is made by first connecting eight Grace Hoppers together with three NVLINK Switches. Then finally, 32 are joined together, with another layer of switches, to connect a total of 256 Grace Hopper chips.

The resulting ExaFLOP Transformer Engine has 144 TB GPU memory and functions as a giant GPU providing a 600GB Hopper architecture GPU building block. The NVIDIA DGX GH200 could be fast enough to be in the Top 500 Supercomputers list. Except for Amazon, all other tech giants, including Google Cloud, Meta, and Microsoft have already lined up as early adopters.

ASUS Shows Off New Power Slot For GPUs Capable Of Delivering Up To 600W

The latest generation of graphics cards, especially from NVIDIA have faced several issues pertaining to power supply or delivery. Several of these power-hungry cards had power connectors that kept failing.

At the ongoing Computex 2023 event, ASUS showcased its own solution. ASUS revealed a proprietary power solution, which essentially adds a slot that extends beyond the normal PCIe x16 slot. This extra slot can deliver up to 600W of power directly through the motherboard.

ASUS demonstrated a new concept ROG GeForce RTX 4070 GPU with proprietary power, which fully eliminates the power cables along with a compatible motherboard. While this is a great, clean, and reliable solution that ditches wires, it also severely limits your GPU and motherboard options.

ACER Showed Off Swift Edge And Predator 16 Laptops

Acer announced the world's first laptop that's compatible with Wi-Fi 7, which promises to deliver up to 5.8Gbps download speeds over a wireless network with a low latency of 2ms.

The Acer Swift Edge 16 is a new ultra-slim OLED laptop with a 3.2K display that can be configured with up to an AMD Ryzen 7 7040HS CPU. It will be available in July, starting at $1,299 / €1,199 (approx. ₹1,07,500)

Acer also announced the new Predator Triton 16 gaming laptop. It's an attractive model in an all-metal housing with a sparkling silver finish. It can be configured with a 13th Gen Intel CPU along with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 discrete laptop GPU and up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM. It will be available in September at a starting price of $1,799 / €2,229 (approx. ₹1,50,000).
