Google's Engineering Director For AR/VR OS Quits Citing “Unstable Commitment And Vision”

Google has lost a veteran operating systems engineer. After successfully co-developing Windows NT, and an OS for Facebook's AR glasses, Mark Lucovsky moved to Google but has quit the company.

Google's efforts to develop an operating system for Mixed Reality headsets and AR|VR glasses may have hit a serious hurdle after Mark Lucovsky, Google's Engineering Director For AR/VR OS, left the company. Let's look at the reason that Mark claims compelled him to leave the project midway and the possible implications.

Google's Engineering Director For AR/VR OS Quits

Mark Lucovsky Leaves Google Claiming Undesired Leadership And Unstable Vision

Mark Lucovsky, the engineering director of Google's upcoming AR/VR operating systems quit the project and the company. In a statement posted to Twitter, Lucovsky cited "recent changes in AR leadership and Google's unstable commitment and vision" as reasons for his departure.

Mark Lucovsky worked wonders for Microsoft in the 90s, when he co-developed Windows NT. Needless to say, this workstation OS eventually became the technology foundation of all Windows versions from XP onwards.

Starting in 2017, Lucovsky joined Facebook's efforts to build a new operating system for AR glasses. After five years of working on the project, Mark quit, but the reasons were quite concerning and had nothing to do with technical or financial limitations.

Mark quit Facebook citing whistleblower Frances Haugen's revelations that the company was aware of the negative societal effects of its platforms. However, instead of trying to address these apparent pitfalls, Facebook prioritized profits, Mark claimed. It is possible Mark was referring to the negative psychological effects on youngsters and adolescents while using Facebook and Instagram.

Within two months of quitting Facebook, Lucovsky joined Google, leading the search giant's XR operating system effort. After two years working at Google, Mark abruptly quit the project and the company.

Will Mark Lucovsky's Departure Negatively Impact Google's XR Glasses Project?

Several companies, including Meta and Google, laid off hundreds of employees during the post-pandemic period. Google laid off Clay Bavor earlier this year.

Among other projects, Bavor led Google's AR/VR efforts from 2015. It is possible that Mark Lucovsky feared Google had chosen to prioritize other projects.

It appears Google has, in fact, decided to abandon some hardware projects and instead, focus on software and services. Recent reports have suggested Google is providing a software platform for manufacturers such as Samsung.

Google is tipped to offer Android "XR" for headsets and Android "micro XR" for glasses. It is quite possible that Mark was working on these operating systems. Samsung, on the other hand, is rethinking the segment owing to the Apple Vision Pro. This uncertainty may be the reason Mark Lucovsky quit Google.
