Intel Chip For AI: “Falcon Shores” CPUs Heavily Optimized For Artificial Intelligence Models Like ChatGPT?

Intel strongly intends to compete in the increasingly lucrative and steadily growing Artificial Intelligence (AI) segment. It has announced its roadmap for the next three years, in which it outlined some of its products that will compete against NVIDIA and AMD.

At a supercomputing conference in Germany, Intel provided a few details on a chip optimized for AI computing that it plans to introduce in 2025. The company appears to be shifting gears and altering its strategy for the dynamically altering market.

Intel Was Late To The AI Race, But Promises To Catchup With NVIDIA And AMD

NVIDIA is currently the clear market leader when it comes to chips or processors intended for AI. The company's technology for GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) has helped the company deploy relevant solutions quickly and scale them up to meet the growing demand.

AMD too is a prominent player in the GPU market. However, it has been focusing primarily on the CPUs and APUs, which currently challenge Intel in the laptop and desktop market. AMD is expected to challenge NVIDIA's position with the MI300 chip.

Currently, Intel is nowhere in the AI chip race. Although Intel makes some GPUs, they are still rudimentary. Moreover, after its Ponte Vecchio chip suffered years of delays, Intel basically doubled down on improving CPU technology.

Intel intends to develop its own chip dedicated to AI applications. The company claims it has nearly completed shipments for Argonne National Lab's Aurora supercomputer based on Ponte Vecchio.

At the supercomputing conference in Germany, Intel said its forthcoming "Falcon Shores" chip will have 288GB of memory and support 8-bit Floating Point computation. These technical specifications are important for Artificial Intelligence models like OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard, and others.

Jeff McVeigh, interim head of Intel's accelerated computing systems and graphics group, said the company is taking time to rework the chip after giving up its prior strategy of combining graphics processing units (GPUs) with its central processing units (CPUs).

Simply put, Intel intends to offer dedicated products for desktops, laptops, graphics, and AI tasks. Moreover, the company intends to sell solutions to multiple buyers and industries, thereby spreading its portfolio.
